2018-12-17

  • Met at the Long Island Welcome Center on the Long Island Expressway (at 7pm)
  • Next meeting set for Monday, January 28th at the Long Island Welcome Center at 8pm
  • Price of Bitcoin down to $3651 USD/BTC on Bitfinex. Had been down below $3300 USD/BTC two days ago
  • Coinbase now allows converting between cryptocurrencies without converting to cash first (only in the U.S. for now)
  • Browsed to YouTube and ran into an interesting "Restricted Mode" issue where some videos wouldn't show;
    it is not entirely clear what causes this setting to be "set". The online explanation for "How does Restricted Mode works" is unclear.
    It seems to be that the "Restricted Mode" version of YouTube is on a dedicated IP address for that service.
  • Discussed plans for upgrading the Lidmug server to a new machine/VM and newer OS.
  • Did some server work to refresh OS image for Bitcoin node
  • Discussed MTA (i.e. mail server daemon) options for new machine/VM migration
  • Discussed proxy server networking in relation to URL queries and DNS

  • Next meeting set for Monday, December 17th at the Long Island Welcome Center at 7pm
    (to avoid conflicts with Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve)
  • Price of Bitcoin down to $3808 USD/BTC on Bitfinex (fairly big drop)
    the drop this time seems to have been precipitated by events in a Bitcoin Cash fork (BCH)
  • Had a chuckle at a picture making fun of Bitcoin's price drop
  • Discussed implementation details of Bitcoin Cash forks, BCH-ABC / BCH and BCH-SV / BSV
    both started out without replay protection, leading to a lot of uncertainty
  • Miners switched from mining Bitcoin to mining BCH-ABC
  • Discussed the confusion of the implementation of Tether which is tied to the dollar.
    There are fees for deposits and withdrawls.
  • Briefly discussed Con Kolivas's BFS scheduler
  • Discussed implementation of VLANs using a single switch and one router port using VLAN trunking
    and then setting up multiple VLANs on the router port

  • Next meeting set for Monday, November 26th at the Long Island Welcome Center
  • Price of Bitcoin up to $6354 USD/BTC on Bitfinex (fairly flat for the last month)
  • Discussed comparison of NASDAQ price to Bitcoin price -- graphs seem to have a similar shape
  • Found CaptainAltCoin.com for information on other coins than Bitcoin
  • Discussed Maker (MKR) coin which has asset backing and came out early last year, now has
    $650M in capitalization. Briefly had a look at the whitepaper for DAI, the coin that MKR is based on.
  • Created a test mailing list to try to work out text tag removal from list emails
  • Discussed IBM purchasing Red Hat and speculated as to what this means for other Linux distributions
  • Sent test message to test mailing list, resulting email is still stripping numbered [#] tags

  • Price of Bitcoin down to 6241 USD/BTC on Bitfinex
  • Discussed story: Cryptocurrency's 80 Percent Plunge Is Now Worse Than the Dot-Com Crash
  • Discussed Bitcoin's market dominance uprise due to altcoin prices dropping
  • Member had the idea of emailing meeting minutes to the mailing list. We all agreed.
  • Got word that Hipchat was shut down after being bought by Slack and quickly shut it down; Slack costs 3x as much.
    An open-source alternative is Mattermost.
  • Member gave us word that Bitcoinplus is shutting down on December 31st, 2018.
    After logging in the member was confused that due to Bitcoin forks there were 25 coins to withdraw.
  • After something with dating mentioned, looked up whether altcoins exist related to dating,
    found datecoin.io and datingcoins.org.
    We had a laugh when a member noticed that saying "datingcoins dot o r g" sounds exactly like "datingcoins dot orgy".
  • In March 2018, ICANN has decided not to pursue legal action for lack of WHOIS information on TLDs that don't publish them for GDPR compliance.
  • Member gave us word that the new Steam client Beta installs Proton,
    which is a new multi-threaded Wine compatibility layer to play Windows games on Linux.

  • Went to meet at Panera Bread in Huntington at the Walt Whitman Mall and found it closed
    for a training for new products for Panera Bread employees only
  • Relocated the meeting for the night to the Long Island Welcome Center on the
    Long Island Expressway, just east of exit 51 (Deer Park Avenue)
  • Next meeting July 30th at the Long Island Welcome Center
  • Price of Bitcoin down to ~6200 USD/BTC
  • Talked about various altcoins, use and infrastructure concerning spinning up a new altcoin
  • Looked at Bitcoin Gold price, has had large drops and is now ~25 USD/BTG
  • Discussed mining various altcoins and some bits about mining strategies and hardware

  • Next meeting June 25th at Panera Bread in Huntington
  • Price of Bitcoin down to 8400 USD/BTC
  • Requirements for purchasing Bitcoin in Coinbase seems to have changed recently; by default it now takes a week to buy Bitcoin
  • Examined buy/sell limits in Coinbase accounts (which seem to vary often)
  • Helped member retrieve cryptocurrency from an old wallet installation

  • Next meeting May 21st at Panera Bread in Huntington (May 28th is Memorial Day holiday)
  • Price of Bitcoin up to ~9200 USD/BTC (dropped $200 to 9000 USD/BTC as we sat at the table)
  • Had a look at Twister website (software for peer-to-peer microblogging)
  • Mentioned Memo, a social network built on Bitcoin Cash
  • Member mentioned Sandboxie for sandboxing Windows VMs
  • Heard news that Microsoft disbanded the Windows Development Group, merged with Azure group
  • Discussed server administration for starting/stopping our Bitcoin node for upgrades
  • Discussed some issues of travel relating to Passports and Visas
  • Back in 2003 there were 15 U.S. that issued drivers licenses without photos; today it appears all have photos
    New York was the last U.S. state to switch to photos on drivers licenses, 1986
    13 U.S. states still allow for no photo on a driver's license, only for reasons of religious beliefs
    (New York is not one of the states that allow this.)
  • Discussed (vaguely) properties of ZCash and Monero cryptocurrencies in terms of anonymity
  • Discussed (general) differences between SELinux and AppArmor security configuration
